Mayor Fred Eisenberger shared the news of the sudden and unexpected death of former Ward 1 Alderman and Councillor Marvin Caplan.

Caplan died earlier today. At 12:02pm this afternoon, in his last post to Facebook, Caplan posted to Facebook expressing his condolences to Hamilton's Muslim community following the Quebec shootings.

Senior Advisor to the Mayor Chris Cutler wrote on Facebook, at 7:46pm:

It was with great sadness that I learned that my friend Marvin Caplan former city councillor for the City of Hamilton and current board chair with the Social Planning and Research Council of Hamilton has passed away late this afternoon. My heartfelt condolences go out to his wife Judi and his sons. Marvin was good to me and I never forget a kindness. Thank you one last time.

Mayor Eisenberger says the flag at City Hall will remain at half-staff until after the funeral.
