Hamilton MPP Ted McMeekin (Ancaster, Dundas, Flamborough, Westdale - Liberal) has been assigned by Premier Kathleen Wynne to:

Work with government partners and stakeholders, communities, and people with lived experience to prepare a report on rural poverty in Ontario. Your report will highlight the unique factors contributing to poverty in rural communities, and make policy recommendations that will inform our poverty reduction efforts.

The assignment comes in a new mandate letter issued to McMeekin in his role as Parliamentary Assistant to the Premier.

McMeekin completed his Social Work Masters thesis in 1975 on affordable housing, and often expressed a desire to apply those skills in government.

No dates were provided in the mandate letter for McMeekin to complete his report. The 42nd Ontario general election is scheduled to be held on or before June 7, 2018 - giving McMeekin only a few months to research and consult before submitting his report on rural poverty in Ontario.
